Before Brandfreak uncovered the similarities between these two commercials I personally had never heard of Captain D’s, who according to their website have only one location in the northeast. Interestingly though, they have twenty six locations in Florida. Hmmm, isn’t there a big ad agency in Florida that picked up the Domino’s business a couple of years back. Hmmm.
The Domino’s version is shorter, which makes sense when you are buying national media. And they burn their cease-and-desist, which makes sense considering they are in an oven baked showdown with Subway, whereas Captain D’s simply tears theirs up, but the idea is the idea. Receive a cease and desist. Destroy a cease and desist. Make your competitor look like a big blowhard in front of your target audience.
Is imitation the sincerest form of flattery. Or just a lack of originality.
